My Top Ten (3)
Painting number three in my ten favourite paintings. I'd have to include a Rembrandt self-portrait. He was different. He had an eye and a sense of forensic investigation second to none (Lucien Freud?). This is the older Rembrandt, wary, disappointed, frustrated, with the most beautiful eyes. He plays with paint like a kid plays with dirt, but finds a quality in the flesh that nobody else can do. I could have picked older ones, or his young paintings, but this isn't just a picture of a world-weary, troubled man, it IS a world-weary, troubled man.
